Build me up buttercup

Don't let yourself down when designing. If you're the kind of person who likes ray-of-sunshine yellow, there's no need to stick with convention and adopt only neutrals in your property.

Of course, you might be torn about the possibilities – after all, if you're planning on selling your property in the near future, you may find neutral paint shades on your walls make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Alternatively, you might be besotted with the idea of bright shades, but are concerned about how to make a small space look bigger.

A particular contemporary design trend for living spaces ensures you get the best of both worlds. Instead of settling on a single neutral shade to deck out a space, opt for a range. That means a soft grey like Resene Quarter Stonewashed on the walls, cream curtains and crisp white lampshades. Then, add tan or beige furniture akin to Resene Half Gargoyle.
