3rd= prize professional mural 2015

Mural Masterpieces - Hill Road Village Centre BayviewAn entry from Hill Road Village Centre Bayview in the Resene Mural Masterpieces competition 2015

Location:
Hill Road Village Centre Bayview, Napier.

Team:
Jil of Aotearoa.

Accessible to public:
Yes.

Mural theme:
Background to mural creation: Originally (2005) a mural was created to beautify the main stretch and create discussion about what goes on and what unites people in the community.

Background to mural creation:
This mural is in three parts:
• Left: Ocean and coastline of the Hawkes Bay, showing the ranges to the south of Bay View, iconic Cape Kidnappers, Mt Hikurangi, Te Mata Peak; references to the fruit bowl of Hawkes Bay as much produce is grown in Bay View; aphids on fruit as there are significant organic gardens in the district; flax and basket symbolising the ‘weaving of communities’.
• Centre mural – sport of the district. With the Petane Domain a very prominent facility of this village, sport is an integral part of this community, uniting the entire region in competitive weekly interactions.
• Right mural – The Ahuriri Lagoon and Estuary. This was the largest natural estuary in the North Island – Ika Nui A Maui. The 1931 earthquake transformed this estuary and boating harbour into the swampy flatlands we see today. Now it harbours the Napier Airport and council Lagoon farm. The ranges to wet and north – Titi Okura, the Saddle, one of the highest peaks in the district. There are references to the wineries, market gardens, orchards and iconic Esk Valley Church, a favourite wedding venue, up the great State Highway 5, the mighty road to Taupo (the Napier-Taupo Road). The camelia is the street tree of the Bay View Village. Remembrance of NZ soldiers is a dominant site along the waterfront with the old WWI bunker. The peacock feather represents the many ‘more recent’ immigrants to this province. Peacocks are wild and numerous in this district. The huia feather represents the Maori and people before Maori – Tangata Whenua of this district.
