From the Resene/Your Home and Garden Colour Home Awards Competition - 2016/2017 finalist

Clever use of colour and skilful paintwork helped to create this soothing nursery.

Keri Clarke, co-founder of the Be Your Own Heroine website, and husband Wayne, a general manager, have lived in their four-bedroom Flat Bush, Auckland home for six years. They wanted their new daughter’s nursery to be stylish and not “too saccharine”. Keri, a graphic designer, came up with a triangle print, which the couple painted in a soft grey, Resene Pale Slate, Resene candy floss pink Blossom and Resene Moonbeam, a pale lemon yellow. They painstakingly taped the design up and painted it themselves, with help from Wayne’s mother, Tessa. “We are so pleased with the result,” Keri says. “In those early days, when I was sleep-deprived, nursing and changing nappies during the night, I drew comfort and peace from this beautiful room.”

Daughter Madison loves her bedroom, Keri says. “She often wakes from a nap and wants to stay in her bed, just hanging out. She loves naming the colours, shapes and animals.” The animal photographs served as a starting point for the feminine colour palette. “We wanted to create a beautiful, soothing space for her,” Keri says.
