John Botica is our Resene Colour Home of the Year winner for his bold use of Resene paints and outdoor mosaics. John’s fence won the monthly prize in November; now he’s claimed the top prize – $2500 to spend at Noel Leeming. Take in John’s colourful garden for some off-the-wall inspiration!

You’ll never find John Botica of Beachlands, Auckland, living in neutral surroundings. “That would never happen,” he says. John’s world is in Technicolor – he has used the brightest Resene shades and vibrant Spanish tiles to turn his outdoor area into a visual fantasy. Every surface, from the fence to the brick barbecue and the concrete water tank, has been adorned with his favourite theme – the art of the South American Indians. These include the Incan man on the fence, the Incan woman on the barbecue and the toucan parrot and Incan warrior on the exterior of the house.

John, who is a professional tennis coach, doesn’t bother with a plan before he picks up his brushes. “I just get started,” he explains. “I’m very comfortable with large surfaces.” Winning the Resene Colour Home award tops the many compliments he regularly gets from passersby. “When people come into our place they feel so energised. They just can’t believe it. It’s the arrangement of colour that is important and having the courage to do it,” he explains. John’s love of mosaics was inspired by the work of his wife Karin and he’s keen to take on commissioned mosaic art for other people’s gardens.
