Breaking the mould - protect your paint finish against mould with Resene MoulDefender

From the What's New archive - December 2000...

Paint films have to put up with an awful lot of abuse during their lifetimes, not the least of which is attack by mould.

On painted surfaces, mould looks like dirt and frequently the two cannot be visually distinguished. The most common species of mould are black but others can be brown or green. By wetting the surface and rubbing, mould will show up as slime.

Mould is a major cause of paint disfigurement. It destroys the paints fresh, clean appearance and if left unchecked shortens the life of the paint film. Unless removed within a few months of its appearance, mould penetrates the body of the existing film and, once firmly established, will grow through subsequent paint coatings impairing adhesion and ruining the appearance of the paintwork.

Most high quality paints contain a fungicide but as its killing ability is finite mould will eventually take over. The only way to remove mould permanently is to remove the source of moisture and/or provide adequate ventilation. After all, mould will only grow in damp areas or where the relative humidity is greater than 70%.

Fungicidal washes also have a part to play - they can be used as a cosmetic treatment to clean up mould-infested surfaces where provision of adequate ventilation is not possible. They must also be used to sterilise old surfaces before repainting.

Fungicidal washes such as Resene Moss & Mould Killer are extremely effective at killing mould with the added benefit of bleaching the moulds clean. However, it is important to realise that they have no residual effect - any ongoing effect must be provided by the paint itself or further maintenance.

Most high quality paints contain fungicide at a level designed to cope with normal exposure. There are some occasions and micro-climates (such as damp bathrooms) where additional defence may be needed, which is why Resene has launched new Resene MoulDefender. Resene MoulDefender is an acrylic paint compatible blend of fungicides and algicides. This product is designed to be added at the point of sale when a particular need for extra protection against mould is identified. Essentially Resene MoulDefender acts as a mould protection booster shot in your paint.

Resene MoulDefender will not necessarily prevent all future mould growth as this is impossible, particularly in very damp areas. However, the addition of Resene MoulDefender will significantly slow down the growth of new mould, minimising maintenance requirements. Improved ventilation methods, such as extractor fans in bathrooms, will also act to slow down the growth of new mould.

Resene MoulDefender is available from selected Resene ColorShops nationwide.
