For some, it was less than five years ago that their sewing ability extended to mending rips in school uniforms, making a mat for the kettle or crafting a door snake to stop winter draughts. .
Fashion students from Whitecliffe Fashion Tech have revealed the high quality of their design and construction skill by presenting a work of contemporary fashion in silk in an array of Resene paint colours.
The colours are vibrant in both name and hue. Think Resene Bowie, Resene Pursuit, Resene Decadence, Resene Hyperactive, Resene Wishlist and Resene Scrumptious among others, all with their own design backstory.
The 2020 brief asked students to follow the design theme New Beginnings. It read: 'bring the positive emotion you felt as we emerged out of lockdown to your design; moving out of darkness into light; entering a slower, kinder, gentler, lighter world; appreciating connection with others; and looking towards brighter days ahead.'
In seven years of the Resene Colour of Fashion project more than 200 students of fashion have been given a highly visible platform in the fashion industry on the strength of this partnership between New Zealand's leading paint and fashion education companies.
In 2020 Dame Pieter Stewart, founder of New Zealand Fashion Week, joined the judging panel.
With the nation's leading annual fashion event postponed for the first time in 20 years, due to COVID-19, the Resene Colour of Fashion team is delighted Dame Pieter has a space in her diary.
Dame Pieter will join New Zealand Fashion Museum curator Doris de Pont, founder of Whitecliffe Fashion Tech, Val Marshall-Smith and Resene marketing manager Karen Warman at the judging table.
They will select between ten and fifteen finalists whose work will be seen in street posters arranged by Resene in spring as the new painting season starts.
The finalists will also lead Whitecliffe Fashion Tech's graduate runway show in November, where the 2020 winner will be announced and a prize from Resene presented.
The 2020 project gives all students the opportunity to direct their own portfolio images from behind the camera at a professional fashion shoot and to feature in this Resene on-line gallery.
It's a project involving undergrads in their final year of study at Whitecliffe campuses in Auckland and Wellington this year.
With the challenges of 2020 and without New Zealand Fashion Week as a showcase for our finalists, we're forging forward with a fresh focus. Whitecliffe tells us that the level of challenge and excitement the project has brought to the students' learning in their graduate year has been just as strong this year, despite the changes. Resene loves seeing creative young people immerse themselves in their Resene colour and produce a stunning look that this year combines new elements: a new brief, their Resene colour, their lockdown experience, their fashion inspiration, the people who have influenced them most in their lives and their awesome creative tutors at Whitecliffe.
