Whether you're a home decorating enthusiast or a designer by trade, when Pantone releases its seasonal report every few months it can help to inject new inspiration into your plans, putting the spotlight on colours which may have previously slipped under your radar.

Pantone's Spring 2015 Fashion colours may have been designed to breathe fresh life into the runways, but that doesn't mean you can't take a little inspiration for your home decorating projects. Here we take a look at some refreshing ideas for spring that can vitalise your space.

Dive into spring

One of the standout colours in the Pantone report is undoubtedly the vibrant aquamarine, standing out as an accent amongst the rest of the warmer palette. To get an idea of what it could look like, take a sneak peek at the wonderful Resene Seeker.

While the colour has the potential to be a statement in its own right, you can add balance to Resene Seeker by matching it with one of its complementary colours, such as the pale mint of Resene Reservoir, or the French vanilla of Resene Melting Moment.

Ocean-inspired blues can also be anchored with darker colours to create structure and depth, such as the positively nautical Resene Whale Tail and even the earthy allure of Resene Toorak.

Feeling nautical

There are a million and one ways to add some seafaring inspiration to your decor. Wall murals are a whimsical way to set the scene, and thanks to the Resene range of Environmental Graphics murals you can do just that.

How about a peaceful vista such as Lighthouse Cove? Created by talented painter Jacqueline Penney, this tranquil scene transports you to a balmy day at an ocean-front beach house. There is also the blissful Ocean Breeze by Terry Donnelly, featuring a palm tree and an azure ocean.

If you have fond memories of your own trips to the beach, why not let your holiday photos be your muse for a stunning custom wallpaper? With the magic of Resene WallPrint, you can design your very own mural that will spark heartwarming stories of your time spent under the sun.

Tying in your furniture

A stalwart of nautical style is distressed wooden furniture. It brings to mind deck chairs weathered by sea spray and the ocean breeze, and old yachts moored in the harbour.

To create this effect yourself, here's what you need to do:

  1. Remove any existing paint, otherwise leave intact and skip straight to step four

  2. Distress the wood by hitting it with a hammer or mallet, or use a chisel to take off some of the sharp edges. Another favourite technique is to fill a plastic bag or sock with metal screws and repeatedly hit the wood

  3. Create a base colour with Resene Duck Egg Blue and allow it to dry completely

  4. Next, add a topcoat of Resene Half Carefree and leave it to almost fully dry

  5. While it's still slightly tacky, take a damp cloth and gently rub some of the top coat away to reveal the base layer

  6. Once dry, enjoy your stylishly distressed furniture!

Alternatively, you can achieve a beautifully subtle whitewashed look for your interior timber with Resene's Colorwood Whitewash. Environmentally approved, this paint is both low odour, and has a lower VOC (volatile organic compounds) content than other stains and polyurethanes.

The good news is that Resene Colorwood isn't just available in white, but also in brights and natural timber inspired colours, allowing for a seamless match with the rest of your decor.
