Reasons to revamp your kitchen

You'll likely prepare at least one meal in here during work days and possibly more during the weekend. Aside from the living room, the kitchen is a commonly frequented room in the home.

Just as you would customise your bedroom to reflect your personal taste, so too can you fit out your kitchen.

There are plenty of reasons why now could be a good time to renovate your kitchen. Whether you completely redesign the space or refresh the colour scheme is up to you. There's no shortage of ways to breathe fresh life into this space, so whether you want to spend a little or a lot, there's always a reason to revamp your kitchen!

It lacks style

If you've bought an older home with a vision of doing it up, but the kitchen never made the list, why not start now?

Whether it's a dated splashback, grimy countertop or an unpleasant colour scheme, there could be plenty of features in a kitchen that don't scream style.

You'll need to think about the kind of kitchen revamp that would suit your time and budget. For instance, if it's just the storage that's getting you down, think about replacing clunky overhead cupboards with a single, freestanding shelving unit.

Perhaps you've got wooden cupboards, which you'd enjoy if they weren't in such poor quality. A wood veneer can be placed over top to update the look.

Think about painting the space, too. A shade like Resene Thorndon Cream is on-trend and will help bring a fresh, modern feel to the space.

Don't forget to review your lighting as well. If your kitchen is home to dated lampshades, ditch them for something a little more contemporary.

Add value to your home

Whether you're living in your first home and want to upgrade in future years, or you plan to sell later on for any other reason, you'll want to get a good price for your property.

One way you can ensure your sale price is the best it can be is by focusing on particular rooms in your home – and that includes the kitchen.

It's important not to overcapitalise, but there are certainly changes you can make to the space that will ensure there's plenty of interest if – and when – you choose to host open inspections.

For instance, installing a marble countertop might not be the most cost-effective approach. However, a feature splashback could be a winner at a fraction of the price.

There are plenty of things that potential buyers will look out for, so it's important to be aware of them.

Quality fittings are a must, but that doesn't mean you have to buy the most expensive types. Clean flooring in a neutral shade is a sure-fire winner, while a clean colour aesthetic on the whole will make the room pop.
