Making sure your home can withstand autumn weather

From the Resene decorating blog

Autumn is here in Australia and New Zealand, and that means you can expect colder temperatures – along with plenty of wind and rain – in the next few months.

Making sure your home can withstand autumn weather

The question you need to ask yourself as a homeowner, then, is if your property is going to be able to withstand the changing weather, keeping you happy and comfortable.

What goes into keeping your home in the best possible shape this autumn, so that it can also stand up to even harsher weather in winter? We have a few suggestions, so read on to find out:

Keep drains and gutters unclogged

If you have gutters around your home or rainfall tends to pool on your property following storms, now is the time to make sure you can keep that water away from your home, according to Metricon. That means making sure you have proper drainage wherever possible, and that drains and gutters are kept free of debris. Even small backups can cause serious damage that may take you some time to discover.

Make sure big trees are pruned

Along with all the rain of the season, you're also more likely to see high winds in the fall, and that means that heavy tree branches – especially those that are in poor shape, decaying or dead – can fall and cause potentially significant damage to your property, or those around it. For that reason, it's a good idea to prune back these potentially dangerous limbs as necessary. If you're not sure what poses a risk, it's always better to err on the side of caution if you can.

Cut down big trees

Got a big tree? It might be time to prune it or cut it down.

Examine your outdoor woodwork

Your house no doubt has a lot of wood that is left exposed to the elements over the years. Before the heavy rains arrive, you should do a careful inspection of all that woodwork, whether it's just your home's siding, a back porch or just patio furniture. If there is some obvious wear and tear, repainting or sealing it is probably a good idea to add that extra layer of protection from the elements.

Prep your plants

If you have a love of backyard gardening or just want to keep the shrubs around your house looking their best, you may have to take some preventative steps to protect them from autumn and winter conditions. LJ Hooker recommended that you get this work done as soon as you can, and a little bit of research online into how to properly care for the specific plants on your property is always a good idea.

Keep the heat in

When the temperature drops, you will no doubt want to crank up the thermostat in your home so you can stay comfortable and cosy in the coming months. But is your home ready? Check the seals around doors and windows and patch any cracks or fissures to ensure that all the heated air you're pumping throughout your house actually stays inside.

Check on the roof

The same concern about escaping heat also applies to ceilings and the roof of your structure – after all, heat rises. But there's more to it than that: When temperatures dip and rain falls, missing shingles or tiles can lead to serious damage. Hipages recommended getting up on the roof to make sure everything up there is in good shape, and preparing to replace anything that looks like it needs to be swapped out.

Make sure your lights work

This tip is more about convenience and comfort than standing up to harsher conditions, but with days getting shorter, now is the time to swap out your older light bulbs for highly efficient models, according to Real Estate View. When you do so, you'll cut your power bills and ensure every corner of your home is as welcoming as you want it to be in the months ahead.

Repaint

Another great way to get cosy this autumn and winter is to redecorate your home. That includes putting out more blankets and pillows if you'll be spending more time on the couch or in bed, but also repainting a room or two. Some people might want darker, warmer tones so that rooms truly feel welcoming all year long, while others may want a lighter colour that makes rooms feel brighter and bigger. With so many options available, you're sure to find a shade that suits your taste this autumn.
