Make sure your next painting project protects the planet

There's good news for anyone planning to undertake a painting project in the near future – it's safer than ever before, thanks to new paint technology.

It's well known that some solvents can have a detrimental effect on the environment. Many manufacturers have realised the need for improved paint safety, and are releasing products which are gentler on the environment.

Resene Zylone Sheen VOC Free is one brand of paint that is doing its bit for the planet. It has no added volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have been found to have a damaging effect on the ozone layer. VOC emissions can also cause health problems such as nausea and allergies, so it makes sense to minimise them where possible.

The market today is dominated by waterborne technology, making architectural paints cleaner and greener. Choose a waterborne paint when planning your next project and you will be protecting both your health and the environment, as these paints contain very low levels of harmful solvents.

The general rule of thumb with paint is to use it up, dry it up or pass it on. This is according to the Paint Quality Institute, which recommends donating any unwanted pails to local charity groups or organisations in order to minimise waste and help others in need.

For those unable to donate their paint directly, the Resene PaintWise programme has been established to minimise the impact paint waste can have on the environment. People with unwanted paint can bring it in to their local Resene ColorShop and the programme will donate, recycle or responsibly dispose of it.

The service has had over 2 million packs returned and donated over 190,000 litres of paint to community groups to date.
