DIY gardening ideas

Summer brings with it the opportunity to get out into the great outdoors and tackle some long-awaited DIY tasks.

If you're thinking about garden decorating ideas as the weather heats up, have a look at the following tips for inspiration, and let your creative juices flow.

Spruce up your picnic table

Give your existing wooden picnic table a new lease on life by updating its paint job. Start by removing any winter nasties with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and wash with Resene Timber and Deck Wash and thoroughly scrub your table to ensure it's as clean as possible.

While it's drying, think about what colour paint you want to use. You could opt for a splash of bright yellow, such as Resene Gorse, or let the furniture blend into your garden with the beautiful green Resene Feijoa. If you'd rather just let the wood speak for itself, simply apply a Resene stain and your table will be as good as new.

Vege planter

The warmer weather is the perfect time to get your vege garden underway. If you don't have the luxury of a sprawling garden in which to plant your favourite leafy greens, why not build your own vege planter?

If you're starting from scratch you'll need to allow plenty of time to complete the project, and assemble tools including glue, nails, a saw, hammer and nails. You'll also need the wood of your choice to make the planter box. Timber works well and can be painted in a variety of bright colours to really make your vegetables stand out in your yard.

A good tip for your planter is to lay down a polythene lining between your mulch and the box. This provides a layer of protection between crops and timber, prolonging the life of your planter.
