2013 paint colour trends

It's that time of year again – Christmas! That means it's almost 2014, and time to take a look back at some of the hottest colour trends of the year gone by.

If you're completely stuck when it comes to redecorating your home, you may be interested to learn what shades were in fashion in 2013.

After extensive research, we've discovered the most popular colours fell into three distinct groups.

The following is a quick run-down of each, which could help you come to that long sought-after decision!

How about a blast from the past?

It seems that the unobtrusive shades of our childhood homes made a resurgence in 2013.

If you want to be a part of this trend, try incorporating Resene Triple Truffle or Resene Half Innocence into your bedroom design. The former is a rich, inviting brown, while the latter is a calm, comforting green.

There is nothing bold or sharp about these colours – quite the opposite. They're all about making a room appear lived-in, giving the space a 'weathered' appearance that is welcoming and warm.

They can transform your bedroom or lounge into a safe haven, where you'll want to curl up and relax after a hard day at the office. These colours are simple, honest and conjure up images of the good ol' days.

So, if you're afraid that your paint-job will make the room you're renovating look too crisp and clean, or if you want to give some character to the brand-new house you're decorating, you might want to try these colours on for size.

Want to keep it neutral?

In addition to colours that evoke happy memories of days gone by, those tried-and-true neutral tones were all the rage.

Many people associate the word 'neutral' with indecisiveness – or Switzerland. While neutral colours can often be the perfect option for people who have a penchant for changing their minds, they shouldn't be dismissed as 'boring' or 'dull'.

On the contrary, they can be used in conjunction with other, bolder colours to great effect. They can also work just as well in a room all by themselves.

We have discovered that the most popular neutral colours of 2013 all seemed to have a connection with nature. Many DIYers and people who work in the field of interior design alike are opting for shades that are reminiscent of earth and wood.

Resene Irish Coffee and Resene Treasure Chest reflect this trend. They are both a gorgeous brown, with the latter including a hint of gold that gives it a bit of shimmer.

These colours would look even more amazing if they were framed by a different, bolder shade or paired with fabulous patterned curtains or wallpaper. You could even use one of these colours for the feature area and paint the rest of the room in a more neutral colour as a subtle backdrop.

Make it bold and beautiful?

While it may go completely against everything that has heretofore been stated, there are also a fair few people out there who opted coat their walls in bright and fun colours.

These can be used to great effect, but care does need to be exercised in choosing when and where to use them.

For instance, it probably isn't the best idea to paint a tiny room or space with Resene Material Girl – this pink, vibrant paint could become a little overwhelming in close quarters.

However, if you use it on a feature wall or a well-lit, open-planned space, it can really make a room feel ultra-chic and cheerful. Heck, just saying the names of these colours – Resene Big Bang, Resene Impromptu, Resene Spring Fever – can have that effect!
