From BlackWhite magazine - issue 04, capture

A snapshot of today’s top colour and decorating trends.

Pared back 70s design

Colours, textures and materials that were popular in the 1970s are major design trends that reflect a collective sense of nostalgia, but today’s preference for minimalism puts them to use in more pared back ways.

Back wall in Resene China Ivory, right wall in Resene Cape Palliser and painted floor in Resene Teak. Sofa and short lamp from Matisse, painting and tall lamp from Bradfords Interiors, coffee table and rug from Città, mug, cup, saucer and tealight from Michael Joyce, cushion, candle and vases from Faradays.

Decorating with happy hues

Happy hues like yellow, peach and orange are known mood enhancers and have become popular tools to cheer up interiors during difficult times.

Decorating with natural earthy tones

An attempt to ground ourselves during uncertain times has us pining for simplicity and nature. Decorating with natural earthy tones, artisanal objects and tactile textures reflects our desire to protect and preserve what is becoming increasingly important to us – the environment we live in.

Back wall in Resene China Ivory, right wall in Resene Cape Palliser and painted floor in Resene Teak, Resene Cape Palliser, Resene Mercury, Resene Tulip Tree and Resene Porsche. Chair from Domo, cushion from Città, trolley from Matisse, glasses and decanter from Faradays.

A relaxing and mood-lifting colour palette

Earthy greens, browns and terracotta tones meet optimistic hues like peach and yellow in a colour palette that feels both relaxing and mood-lifting.

An olive green and charcoal blue mood board

Deeper, saturated earth hues like olive green and charcoal blue in combination with warm, steeped whites bring reassurance.

Spaces that support self care

Spaces that support notions of self-care and provide solace from the busyness and complexities of everyday life – especially those that bring a human touch and embrace imperfection – are appealing for those looking for room to recover during overwhelming times.

Texture paint effects are popular

Textured paint effects have never been more popular and are being used to create both interest and an air of authenticity.

Homey working spaces at home and in the office

With more people working from home or splitting their work time between their home and office, workplaces are taking cues from domestic settings in an effort to make them more ‘homey’ spaces to spend time.

Back walls and floor in Resene In The Mauve, left wall in Resene Dust Storm, ceiling in Resene Rice Paper and timber steps stained in Resene Colorwood Dark Oak. Sideboard and ottoman from Good Form, chair and large pink vase from Danske Møbler.

Decorating with strong citrus hues

Strong citrus tones are beginning to break through and are set to become a major colour trend in the coming months.

Walls in (from left to right) Resene Canary, Resene Rice Paper and Resene Half Reservoir, floor in Resene Rice Paper and painted vases in Resene Groovy (on chair), Resene Half Reservoir (floor, centre) and Resene Timber Green (floor, right). Chair from Good Form, pink vase from Città.

Looking ahead to cool and crystalline pastels

Cool and crystalline pastels are quickly replacing warmer ones and are sought after by clients who are focused on looking ahead rather than back.
