Cool abstract painting

Create a stylish abstract artwork using a subtle selection of cool Resene colours.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 77

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Glass of clean water, large tin of paint, mineral turpentine for cleaning brush, paintbrush, piece of hardboard approximately 300mm x 400mm, Resene Sureseal, Resene testpot roller and tray, Resene testpots of Resene Horizon, Resene Lucifer, Resene Obelisk, Resene Teal Blue and Resene Warrior, self-adhesive plate hanger, small piece of wood.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Escape.

Other ideas: For a strong monochrome look use Resene All Black, Resene Jaguar, Resene Silver Aluminium and Resene Trojan over a basecoat of Resene Seashell.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, wet the plate hanger with clean water and fix to the back of the board, ensuring it is centred.
Step 2

Apply one coat of Resene Sureseal to the front and edges of the board and allow three hours to dry. Wash brush in mineral turpentine.

Apply one coat of Resene Teal Blue to the front and edges of the board and allow two hours to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Lucifer to the front and edges of the board, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Stand the board on two testpots on the small piece of wood, as shown, and use a large tin of paint behind to keep the board upright. Dribble five lines of Resene Warrior down the board.
Step 6

Dribble three lines of Resene Horizon down the board, as shown.
Step 7
Step seven
Dribble three lines of Resene Obelisk down the board and allow paint to splatter, as shown.
Step 8
Step eight
Dribble lines of Resene Teal Blue down the board, as shown, and then repeat with other colours until you’re happy with the result. Allow to dry thoroughly before hanging.
