Blackboard mug

Turn simple ceramic mugs into works of art with a little bit of help from Resene.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 63

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: Ceramic mug, chalk, clean cloth, paintbrush, paint stirrer, Resene Blackboard Paint, Resene Smooth Surface Sealer, sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background table with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Orang-atan.

Other ideas: For a more colourful effect try one of the other Resene Blackboard Paints – these are available in green, blue and pink.

Step 1
Step one
Lightly sand the outside of the ceramic mug (starting approximately 20mm down from the rim).
Step 2
Step two
Wipe off any sanding residue from the mug with a clean cloth.
Step 3
Step three
Carefully stir the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer with a paint stirrer.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the outside of the mug (starting approximately 20mm down from the rim). Allow to dry.
Step 5

Carefully stir the Resene Blackboard Paint with a paint stirrer.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Blackboard Paint to the outside of the mug (starting approximately 20mm down from the rim). Allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply a second coat of Resene Blackboard Paint and allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Write your chosen hot beverage on the front of the mug with chalk.
