Resene kids art with Mark Rayner - Project 54

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: A picture of a ‘sock monkey’ (ours came from a calendar, but you could also use a colour photocopy from a library book), Glue stick, MDF placemat (our flower shaped one came from ‘Spotlight’), Paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear), Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene testpots of Resene Blackberry and Resene Sassy, Scissors

Top tip: Don’t worry if you’re not able to get an MDF placemat - a flower shape cut out of heavy cardboard will do just as well.

Here's another idea: Create this funky wall hanging using a frog picture from a nature magazine and Resene Tutti Frutti and Resene Turbo.

Step 3
Step three
Carefully cut out the picture of the ‘sock monkey’ – you might need a grown up to help with this bit.
Step 4
Step four
Cover the back of the picture with glue stick and place into position on the placemat, as shown, pressing down firmly to remove any air bubbles. Leave to dry and then trim around the edges using the scissors (again, you might need a grown up to help with this).
Step 5
Step five
Using an artists’ brush, paint some squiggly lines on the placemat and a border around the edge using Resene Blackberry. Leave to dry for two hours.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear) to the front and side edges of the placemat. Allow to dry before fixing to your wall with a big blob of blu-tack.
