1950's surrealist painting

Turn an old framed print into a fabulous retro masterpiece using a few Resene testpots.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 51

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Old framed print (without glass), paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpots of Resene Alabaster, Resene Black (x2), Resene Cashmere, Resene Cobalt, Resene Nite Life, Resene Red Berry, Resene Sambuca and Resene Vintage.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Blake.

Other ideas: Reverse the idea and paint the background with Resene Alabaster and lines with Resene Black then use a combination of Resene Bowie, Resene Havoc and Resene Turbo.

Step 1

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the frame and print and allow two hours to dry.

Apply two coats of Resene Sambuca to the frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 3

Apply two coats of Resene Black to the print, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Nite Life over the Resene Black, brushing the paint in different directions and allowing some of the underneath colour to show through. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 5

Using a fine artists’ brush and Resene Alabaster, paint outlines of organic shapes and lines over the painted background, as shown.
Step 6
Step six
Fill in some of the shapes with one coat of Resene Vintage and Resene Cashmere. Apply the paint roughly, allowing some of the underneath colour to show through.
Step 7
Step seven
Using the same painting technique, fill in some of the other shapes with one coat of Resene Red Berry.
Step 8
Step eight
Fill in the remaining shapes with one coat of Resene Cobalt and allow two hours to dry.
