Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 31

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: Large piece of heavy artists’ canvas, large stretched artists’ canvas panel, packet of zinc plated panel pins, paintbrushes, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Quarter Stonehenge, Resene Sandtex Mediterranean effect tinted to Resene Time Out, Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) flat, Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path tinted to Resene Haast Shale and Resene Shadowland, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Metallic Art Action testpots in the following colours: Resene Blast Grey, Resene Pure Pewter and Resene Time Warp, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Black, Resene Blue Night, Resene Indian Ink, Resene Licorice, Resene Madison, Resene Matisse, Resene Oxymoron, Resene Spinnaker, Resene Subzero and Resene Wedgewood, scissors.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene Zylone 20 tinted to Resene Rich Cream.

Other ideas: Experiment with painting over other heavily textured surfaces such as corrugated cardboard, sandpaper and hessian.

Step 1
Step one
Cut a rectangle of heavy canvas to fit across the front of the artists’ canvas panel. Apply one generous coat of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) flat to the front of the artist’s canvas panel and press the piece of cut canvas onto the Resene Multishield+. Press firmly to remove any trapped air bubbles and leave for several hours for the Resene Multishield+ to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Cut a selection of random shapes from the remainder of the heavy canvas. Prime the canvas panel with a generous coat of Resene Quick Dry.
Step 3
Step three
Before it has a chance to dry, press the random canvas shapes onto the panel and ‘paint down’ with Resene Quick Dry. Allow to dry thoroughly overnight.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Quarter Stonehenge to the entire canvas, including the edges.
Step 5
Step five
Leave to dry for a bit, but before the paint is thoroughly dry, apply a generous coat of Resene Shadowland, Resene Haast Shale and Resene Time Out in a random pattern across the canvas. Use a thick ‘stippling’ technique to build up the texture on the surface of the canvas.
Step 6
Step six
Starting from the darkest coloured testpot (Resene Black), working through to the lightest coloured testpot (Resene Oxymoron), flick and dribble paint generously over the entire canvas in a completely random pattern. (Note: There’s no need to wait for each colour to dry before applying the next.)
Step 7
Step seven
Sprinkle the panel pins onto the wet paint, as shown. Flick and dribble the three Resene Art Action metallic paints across the panel.
Step 8
Step eight
Flick and dribble Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) flat across the panel, ensuring the nails are well covered (this will help to keep them in place. Leave to dry thoroughly before hanging.
