Kiwiana planter

Transform a humble terracotta pot into a fun kiwi planter with a few Resene testpots.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 29

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Latex gloves, paintbrushes (including artists’ brushes), Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss, Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Keppel, Resene Nero, Resene Sambuca and Resene Turbo, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Selleys ‘Knead it’ epoxy putty, square terracotta pot.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Tacao and applied Resene Aquaclear gloss to the wooden shelf.

Other ideas: To create a metallic effect, paint the planter with two coats of Resene Chicago followed by two coats of Resene Pure Pewter followed by Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear).

Wearing the latex gloves, mix the ‘Knead it’ following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Make a kiwi shape, as shown, from the ‘Knead it’ and press firmly onto the side of the terracotta pot. Allow to harden for at least an hour.
Step 3

Completely seal the inside and outside of the terracotta pot with one coat of Resene Terracotta Sealer. Allow to dry for six hours.

Using a small artists’ brush, apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the kiwi and allow to dry for two hours.

Using a small artists’ brush, paint the kiwi with two coats of Resene Sambuca, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Paint the outside, rim and inner rim of the pot with two coats of Resene Keppel, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Paint in the eye details using Resene Turbo and Resene Nero and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss to the outside, rim and inner rim of the pot and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
