Abstract metallic panel

Use a combination of Resene Enamacryl Metallic paints to create a simple abstract panel.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 26

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 18mm MDF panel measuring 400mm x 600mm, clean cloth, paintbrushes (including a large artists’ brush), PVA glue, Resene Enamacryl Metallic (now Resene FX Metallic ) tinted to Resene Yeehaa, Resene FX Metallic tinted to Resene Silver Fern, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Quarter Stonehenge, Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Sandtex Mediterranean Effect, Resene Testpot in Resene Optimist, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, sandpaper, selection of square ceramic tiles, small paint roller and tray.

To get the look: Mark painted the surrounding wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Blake.

Other ideas: Use this same technique to create a fabulous gold panel using a combination of Resene Bullion and Resene Magma.

Step 1
Step one
Prime the MDF panel with one coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and leave for one hour to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Glue the ceramic tiles to the MDF panel, arranging them in an asymmetrical geometric pattern, as shown. Allow to dry for several hours.
Step 3
Step three
Lightly sand the ceramic tiles and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth. Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the tiles and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 4
Step four
Using a ‘stippling’ technique, apply one coat of Resene Sandtex to the entire panel and leave to dry for two to three hours.
Step 5
Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Quarter Stonehenge to the background area of the panel, as shown. Leave to dry for two hours.
Step 6
Step six
Using a small roller, apply two coats of Resene Silver Fern to the background area of the panel, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Use the large artists’ brush to apply one coat of Resene Optimist to each of the tiles, as shown. Leave for two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Using a small roller, apply two coats of Resene Yeehaa to each of the tiles, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. To finish off apply one coat of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss to the entire panel and allow to dry overnight before hanging.
