Resene kids art with Mark Rayner - Project 12

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: Knife, Newspaper, Paintbrushes, Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear), Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat, Resene Testpots of Resene Black, Resene Mai Tai and Resene West side, Rolling pin, Self-hardening modelling clay, Small piece of plywood

Top tip: If the body of the puppy starts to slouch while it’s drying simply support it from the inside with some scrunched up newspaper.

Here's another idea: Use the same technique to create a baby chick and paint it with Resene Golden Dream, Resene Bahama Blue, Resene West Side and Resene Black.

Model a baby chick Another idea: Baby chick

Step 1
Step one
Divide the modelling clay in half and roll flat with the rolling pin on the piece of plywood until the clay is just under a centimetre thick. Cut into a shape as shown (a bit like a triangle with the top cut off).
Step 2
Step two
Form the body of the puppy by ‘pinching’ the two longest edges of the clay shape together. Trim the base so that the body stands upright.
Step 3
Step three
Make a small ball out of newspaper and wrap this with clay to form the puppy’s head. Attach to the body, making sure the clay is well pressed together.
Step 4
Step four
With the remaining pieces of clay, add legs, eyes, ears and form a mouth and nose, as shown. Leave to dry thoroughly.
Step 5
Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat to the clay sculpture. Allow to dry
Step 6
Step six
Paint the puppy with two coats of Resene Mai Tai. Once this is dry, paint the eyes with two coats of Resene West side and Resene Black, and paint the nose and mouth with two coats of Resene Black. Once dry, paint the puppy with one coat of Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear). Woof Woof!!!
