Resene kids art with Mark Rayner - Project 118

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, Hammer, Nail punch, Paintbrush, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene test pots of Resene Bright Spark and Resene Burnt Umber, Sandpaper, Tin can

Top tip: You can also decorate a terracotta pot in the same way – just seal it with Resene Terracotta Sealer instead.

Here's another idea: This ladybird-inspired pot was painted with Resene Black and Resene Bright Red.

Step 1

Make a few drainage holes in the base of the tin using a hammer and nail punch – you might need a grown-up to help with this
Step 2

Lightly sand the outside of the tin with sandpaper – this will help the paint to stick.
Step 3

Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the outside of the tin and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Paint the outside of the tin with two coats of Resene Bright Spark and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Paint stripes on the outside of the tin, as shown, using two coats of Resene Burnt Umber. Again, allow two hours for each coat to dry.
