Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 108

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need:

  • Clean cloth
  • Four old Resene testpots
  • Paintbrushes
  • Picture frame
  • Piece of 6mm MDF cut to fit the picture frame
  • Resene dropcloth

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Baltic Sea.

Other ideas: For a silver and purple combination, dribble Resene Silver Aluminium over Resene Funtasia using a basecoat of Resene Daisy Bush.

How to make an abstract painting:

Step 1 Step one
Remove the glass from the picture frame.
Step 2 Step two
Replace the glass with the piece of 6mm MDF.
Step 3 Step three
Lightly sand the frame to ‘key’ the surface and then wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 4 Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the frame and MDF and allow to dry.
Step 5 Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Teal Blue to the frame and MDF, dabbing the paint on quite thickly to create texture. Allow to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Raise the picture by resting it on four old testpots, ensuring the work surface below is protected with a Resene dropcloth. Apply Resene FX Metallic tinted to Resene Lucifer to the edge of the picture frame, dabbing it thickly to create texture.
Step 7 Step seven
In the same way, apply a thick coat of Resene FX Metallic tinted to Resene Lucifer to the front of the picture and allow to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Using a smaller brush, dribble lines of Resene Bullion on the painting, creating a pattern of abstracted figures and other forms. Allow to dry.
