Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 01

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: 1000mm x 800mm primed artist’s canvas, drawing pins and string for hanging, masking tape (50mm wide), paintbrush, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Niagara, Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) Gloss, Resene Testpots in the following colours: Resene Blue Lagoon, Resene Blue Stone, Resene Hullabaloo, Resene Java and Resene Retro.

To get the look: Mark painted the surrounding wall with Resene Zylone Sheen tinted to Resene Texas Rose.

Other ideas: For a more muted effect try a selection of pastel tones from the Resene MultiFinish P53 colour chart.

Step 1
Step one
Paint face and edges of canvas with two coats of Resene Niagara, allowing at least two hours to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Apply ten strips of 50mm masking tape across the canvas at 50mm intervals, as shown to create ten horizontal stripes.
Step 3
Step three
Paint edges of the masking tape with Resene Niagara and allow to dry. (This helps to prevent ‘bleed-through’ of other colours.)
Step 4
Step four
Starting from the top of the canvas, paint the first and sixth stripe in Resene Retro, the second and seventh stripe in Resene Hullabaloo, and the third and eighth stripe in Resene Blue Stone.
Step 5
Step five
Paint the fourth and ninth stripe in Resene Java and the fifth and tenth stripe in Resene Blue Lagoon. Allow to dry and apply a second coat to each stripe.
Step 6
Step six
Carefully peel off the masking tape to reveal the stripes. Make sure you peel off the masking tape before the paint dries, then leave the paint to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply a coat of Resene Multishield+ Gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear) to intensify colours and create a glossy finish to the canvas. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Fix a hanging device at the back of the canvas with two drawing pins and doubled length of string, as shown.
