With the Lord of the Rings premiere looming, the Wellington City Council undertook an accelerated maintenance programme, including the creation of a new mural to beautify the Civic Square pool with a theme adapted from a proposal originally intended for the Oriental Bay rotunda.
Working solidly and with perfect weather on their side, the mural took the team of Mark O'Brien and colleague Andrew Beggs a week to complete. The mural is coated in two coats of Resene Lumbersider, selected for its excellent colour range and its two coat coverage, and finished in protective clear coats.
The scale of the work and developing a design style that would be easily legible under moving water was challenging. Painting on the horizontal surface was easier than a vertical wall space with no fear or drips and runs, however this positive was balanced against the propensity of a horizontal surface to gather dirt and dust. Managing dust and bird visitations kept the team busy until the mural was complete and the pool filled, at which time they could sit, back relax, reflect and enjoy the new image that dances with the movement of the pool water.
Mark O'Brien is well known for his work with the Monstas cartoons, a cartoon style that dates back to his 1976 schoolbooks and has since appeared in a variety of media and enjoyed an extensive link with the yacht racing world via the Whitbread and America's Cup races.
A Monsta creation for a monster event!
