Tango with terracotta

Mark Rayner shows how to add a tropical touch to your deck or patio with this stylish pot.

You will need:
A large terracotta pot, bucket of warm soapy water and sponge, paintbrushes, including artists’ brushes, good quality potting mix, pebble mulch and a Tamarillo 'Tango'.

Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Monza and Resene Terracotta Sealer. Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Camarone, Resene San Felix and Resene Ventura.

Here's another idea: To give your pot a shiny look, apply two coats of Resene Concrete Clear to the outside, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Thoroughly wash the pot in warm soapy water, rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
Step 2 Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Terracotta Sealer to the inside and outside of the pot. Allow to dry for at least six hours.
Step 3 Step three
Apply two coats of Resene Monza to the outside and inner rim of the pot, as shown, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4 Step four
With a large artists’ brush and Resene Camarone, paint three large leaf shapes across the pot front, as shown. Allow two hours to dry, then apply a second coat.
Step 5 Step five
Using a smaller artists’ brush and Resene Ventura, paint in the veins of each leaf, as shown. Allow to dry for two hours.
Step 6 Step six
Paint in alternating veins using Resene San Felix. Again, allow two hours for the paint to dry.
Step 7 Step seven
Plant up the pot with a 'Tango' tamarillo using good quality potting mix and water well.
Step 8 Step eight
Finish off with a layer of pebble mulch.
