Painted glazed pot

It's easy to transform a glazed ceramic pot into a metallic masterpiece with the help of Resene Metallic paint.

You will need: Large glazed terracotta pot, terracotta sealer, coarse sandpaper, Resene Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Resene Enamacryl Metallic tinted to Resene Silver Aluminium, Resene Sandtex tinted to Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Concrete Clear, paintbrushes, flat wooden stirrer, small roller/paint tray, potting compost, feature plant, pale pebble mulch.

To get the look: Mark painted the background Zincalume panel with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Karaka. Glazed pot available from Mitre10 Mega.

Step 1 how to make a metallic painted glazed pot

Step 1
Sand the glazed surface of the pot with sandpaper to provide a key. Following manufacturer’s instructions, seal the inside of the pot with terracotta sealer and allow to dry.

Step 2 how to make a metallic painted glazed pot

Step 2
Apply one coat of Resene Smooth Surface Sealer to the glazed surface of the pot, ensuring an even coverage. Allow to dry for about two hours.

Step 3 how to make a metallic painted glazed pot

Step 3
Apply one coat of Resene Lumbersider Resene Silver Chalice to outside, rim and inner rim of the pot. Allow to dry for about two hours.

Step 4 how to make a metallic painted glazed pot

Step 4
Carefully stir the Resene Sandtex with a flat wooden stirrer.

Step 5
Working in a criss-cross pattern, as shown, apply one coat of Resene Sandtex to the painted surfaces of the pot – this product helps to create an attractive textured effect. Allow to dry.

Step 6 how to make a metallic painted glazed pot

Step 6
Stir the Resene Enamacryl Metallic paint with a flat wooden stirrer and apply two coats to the pot using a small paint roller and tray, allowing two hours to dry after each coat.

Step 7 how to make a metallic painted glazed pot

Step 7
Apply one coat of Resene Concrete Clear to the pot and allow to dry.

Step 8
Plant up with good quality potting mix, a large feature plan, we used a Dragon Tree, and finish off with a pale pebble mulch.
