Something fishy

Mark Rayner makes a splash with this brightly decorated planter.

You will need: A terracotta pot, Selleys Knead It epoxy, paintbrushes and a small artist’s brush. Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene Quick Dry acrylic primer undercoat and Resene Concrete Clear.

Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene HullabalooResene RetroResene ParsleyResene ManhattanResene Chilean Fire Resene Red BerryResene Lightning Yellow and Resene Nero.

To get the look: Mark planted up the fish pot with a New Guinea impatiens. The background wall painted in Resene Havelock Blue.

Step 1 Step one
Divide the Knead It into five equal portions and mix each one according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Mould into fish shapes and press on to the front of the pot.
Step 2 Step two
Continue until you have five fish, as shown. Allow the Knead It to cure (this should take about an hour).
Step 3 Step three
Seal the inside of the pot using a terracotta sealer, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to dry then prime the inner rim, top edge and outside of the pot with Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat. Allow to dry.
Step 4 Step four
Paint the background with two coats of Resene Hullabaloo. Allow to dry.
Step 5 Step five
Paint each fish with two coats of Resene Chilean Fire. Allow to dry and pick out details with Resene Red Berry (mouth) and Resene Lightning Yellow and Resene Nero (eyes). Allow to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Paint the seabed with two coats of Resene Manhattan. Allow to dry then paint seaweed detail with two coats of Resene Parsley.
Step 7 Step seven
Paint top ridge with two coats of Resene Retro. Allow to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Paint the outside, top edge and inner rim of the pot with two coats of Resene Concrete Clear. Allow to dry.
