Support act

Veggies need staking? Climbers need support? Turn an old bedhead into a funky trellis.

You will need:

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Kill two birds with one stone – clear out the garage and score yourself some funky trellising. Recycling is the name of the game.
Step 2 Step two
Clean the bedhead and lightly sand the enamel and brass surfaces. Brush away any remaining dust before painting.
Step 3 Step three
Apply two coats of Resene Vinyl Etch to provide adhesion to the surface. If a clear lacquer covers the brass, remove this first with Resene Strip-Off.
Step 4 Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider satin acrylic exterior paint tinted to Resene Nero. For a glossy effect, use Resene Hi-Glo instead.
Step 5 Step five
Cut two 50cm lengths from the galvanised pole using a hacksaw. These will be pushed into the ground to support the trellis.
Step 6 Step six
Insert the lengths into the bottom ends of the bedhead. Drill through the bedhead and pole and secure with nuts and bolts.
Step 7 Step seven
Gently push the extended poles into the soil... and voilà! A funky support act for tall plants and climbers.
Step 8 Step eight
Use it in the veggie patch or flower border for stunning effect.
