Leaf panel

Mark Rayner makes creating your own own piece of autumn garden art easy.

You will need: 22mm treated plywood cut as follows:

Exterior PVA glue, 40mm x 2mm galvanised jolt head nails, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Sandtex Mediterranean effect, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Moccaccino, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Havoc, Resene Desperado, Resene Frenzee, Resene Golden Bell, Resene Rusty Nail, Resene Cinnamon, Resene No Bull, Resene Rock Spray, Resene Hazard, Resene Clockwork Orange, Resene Burgundy and Resene West Side. Resene Clearcoat UVS. Saw and hammer, pencil, tape measure, straight edge, paintbrushes and sandpaper.

Top tip: When ready to paint, open all the testpots at once so you can see the colour range and work quite quickly, trying not to mix the colours too much when you apply them - otherwise they could become a bit muddy.

Step 1 Step one
Measure, mark and cut the plywood to the dimensions listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 2 Step two
Assemble the art panel, as shown, fixing along each edge and at the corners with PVA glue and nails.
Step 3 Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the entire panel, including side edges and back and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 4 Step four
Apply one generous coat of Resene Mediterranean effect to the front and side edges of the panel,'dabbing' the paint to create a textured surface. Allow to dry for two hours.
Step 5 Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Moccaccino to the entire panel (including side edges and back), and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 6 Step six
Place the panel on a horizontal surface and, beginning with the darkest coloured testpots (Resene Burgundy and Resene Desperado), generously dab 'blobs' of paint across the front of the panel in a random pattern, as shown.
Step 7 Step seven
Continue building up the layers of paint, working from the darkest colours to the lightest - there's no need to let one colour dry before applying the next. Finish with a few generous dabs of Resene Moccaccino. Leave it 24 hours to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS to the front and side edges of the panel and leave to dry for two hours before hanging.
