Hang 'em up

Mark Rayner shows how to construct a planting pole to display patio or indoor plants.

You will need:

To get the look: Mark planted up the terracotta pots with cool season chrysanthemums and polyanthus to create an instant splash of winter colour.

Top tip: Seal the terracotta pots with Resene Terracotta sealer to prevent water loss.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Measure and cut the lengths of timber to the dimensions listed above. Create the main upright support by fixing the two 1800mm lengths of timber together, as shown, at right angles, using PVA glue and jolt head nails.
Step 2 Step two
Fix the two remaining pieces of timber to the base of the upright support, as shown, using PVA and jolt head nails. Use the set square to ensure the base supports are at right angles to the main upright.
Step 3 Step three
Prime the entire structure with one coat of Resene Quick Dry primer under coat, and allow two hours to dry.
Step 4 Step four
Fix eight 'Leylandlatch' pot hangers down both sides of the two upright supports with the screws provided. Set them in pairs on opposite sides, as shown, or alternate them.
Step 5 Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Smooth Surface Sealer to the Leylandlatch pot hangers, allowing two hours to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Silver Chalice to the entire structure and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7 Step seven
Use an artists' brush to apply one coat of Resene Silver Aluminium to the Leylandlatch pot hangers, using a 'stippling' technique.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Silver Aluminium to the timber support, using a 'stippling' technique, and allow to dry for two hours. Repeat steps seven and eight.
