Button bright

Mark Rayner adds pizazz to a pot with paint and buttons.

You will need: Piece of plastic cling film, terracotta pot, buttons - new or used, paintbrushes and a soft bristled artists brush, PVA glue (exterior), Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene Clearcoat UVS protective glaze, Testpot of Resene West Side. Good quality potting mix and potted colour.

Top tip: Packets of assorted buttons are available in most craft shops (our blue ones came from Spotlight).

Step 1 Step one
Apply one coat of Resene Terracotta Sealer to the inside and outside of the terracotta pot and allow to dry for six hours.
Step 2 Step two
Apply two coats of Resene West Side to the outside and inner rim of the pot, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 3 Step three
Place the pot upside down on a piece of cling film, as shown, this will prevent any glue from sticking to the work surface.
Step 4 Step four
Glue a row of larger buttons around the rim of the upturned pot, as shown, fixing with PVA glue.
Step 5 Step five
Apply a second row of buttons, as shown, gradually building up the decoration around the rim of the pot.
Step 6 Step six
Continue applying the buttons until the outside of the pot is completely covered. Leave overnight for the PVA to dry. thoroughly.
Step 7 Step seven
With the artists brush, apply a generous coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS, to help prevent UV fading, to the pot's outside, inner rim and all buttons, working the glaze into all the gaps.
Step 8 Step eight
When the Resene Clearcoat UVS is thoroughly dry apply a second coat of and let that dry before planting some seasonal colour in the pot.
