Build a bamboo screen

Mark Rayner makes a bamboo screen you could use for sweet peas.

You will need: 70mm and 19mm colonial fence pickets ( 2 x 1.8mm and 4 x 900mm), 11 x 1.8m bamboo canes, 60mm galvanised jolt head nails, saw and drill with 2.5mm drill bit, tape measure, pencil and set square, exterior PVA glue, sandpaper, paintbrush, and paint stirrer, Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Grey Green.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Measure and cut the four 900mm fence pickets to 750mm long, as shown.
Step 2 Step two
Smooth the rough cut edges with sandpaper.
Step 3 Step three
Gently stir the Resene Grey Green Woodsman with a paint stirrer.
Step 4 Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Grey Green Woodsman to the fence pickets, brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow 24 hours for each coat to dry.
Step 5 Step five
Create a rectangular frame by fixing the four short and two long pickets together with 60mm nails and PVA glue, ensuring the corĀners are square. Let the glue dry.
Step 6 Step six
Measure and cut bamboo canes to fit the frame (approx. 1.64m lengths). Measure and mark the central point along the frame's bottom and top edges.
Step 7 Step seven
Slide a bamboo cane into position, aligning it with each mark. Drill a pilot hole through the frame's bottom edge and into the cane. Fix the cane with a 60mm nail.
Step 8 Step eight
Continue in the same way, fixing canes at the top and bottom, making sure they are equally spaced at approximately 50mm apart.
