Pallet seed box

Instructions

Step one — Clean the pallet wood

Use Resene Timber and Deck Wash. Lay your pallet down on a flat surface. With a hand saw or circular saw, cut the deck boards off at the edges of the stringers, run the saw down as close to the stringers as you can to cut the most timber from the pallet. Cut the timber to size as per the cutting list above.

Step two — Cut the channels

These are for the cardboard internal dividers. Use a saw to cut matching 5mm deep channels into one side of each of the long side boards and both sides of the middle divider board. The channels will need to be as wide as the cardboard to slot in nicely.

Step three — Assemble the box

Hold the long sides and short sides together with a speed clamp, then drill pilot holes and screw together. Attach the base boards, drill pilot holes and screw the base boards on. Flip the box over and position the middle divider board upright and in the centre, then drill and screw it in place. It will sit about 20mm higher than the outer box sections but once the lid pieces are attached and closed, the middle divider will sit flush with the lid pieces. Cut and fit the internal cardboard dividers to slot into the channels. Attach the hinges to the lid pieces, then attach the lid pieces to the box. Attach the handle to the centre of the middle divider.

Step four — Paint

I painted my base green, straight onto the unprimed wood then did some old-fashioned sign writing over top. The inside of the lid pieces were painted with green blackboard paint, to create a reusable writing surface for categorising seeds. For an aged look, I rubbed it down with steel wool.
