Instructions

How to build a workbench:

How to build a workbench - Step 1 Step one
Cut two of the 1800mm fence palings into four pieces measuring 50mm x 900mm and four pieces measuring 80mm x 900mm.

How to build a workbench - Step 2 Step two
Attach each of the 50mm strips to one of the 80mm strips to form four legs, as shown, fixing with 65mm screws.

How to build a workbench - Step 3 Step three
From the remaining 1800mm fence paling, cut three pieces measuring 530mm. Cut two of the 1200mm fence palings down to 1170mm.

How to build a workbench - Step 4 Step four
Attach these five pieces together to form a rectangular frame, as shown, fixing with 65mm screws. Use the set square to ensure corners are at 90 degrees.

How to build a workbench - Step 5 Step five
Attach four of the 1200mm fence palings to the top of the frame, as shown, fixing with 65mm screws. Allow an even overhang around all sides of the benchtop (approximately 15mm).

How to build a workbench - Step 6 Step six
Turn the benchtop upside down and attach the legs into position, as shown, fixing with 45mm screws. Use the set square to ensure the legs are perpendicular to the benchtop.

How to build a workbench - Step 7 Step seven
From the remaining 1200mm fence paling, cut two pieces measuring 1070mm x 70mm. From the remaining two 1800mm fence palings, cut six 580mm pieces.

How to build a workbench - Step 8 Step eight
Fix the two 1070mm lengths into position with 45mm screws, as shown, spanning the front and back legs. These should be approximately 300mm up from the bottom of each leg.

How to build a workbench - Step 9 Step nine
Measure, mark and carefully cut four 50mm squares from two of the 580mm pieces of timber, as shown. (Note: If using a circular saw, make the cut from the underside or complete the cut with a handsaw to get a neater finish in the corner.)

How to build a workbench - Step 10 Step ten
Attach the two pieces from Step 9 at either end of the lower shelf (the cut sections should fit around the bench legs) and then attach the four remaining 580mm lengths as shown, fixing all with 65mm screws. Leave an even gap between each of these pieces.

How to build a workbench - Step 11 Step eleven
Sand the entire bench to smooth any rough edges and corners and then wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

How to build a workbench - Step 12 Step twelve
Apply two coats of Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Smokey Ash to the entire bench, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
