Brighten a corner of the winter garden with this vibrant outdoor chair – ideal for taking a moment’s pause to admire your handiwork.
Materials:
Tools:
To get the look: Mark stained the background fence with Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Pitch Black.
Tip (for assembling, step 2): When assembling, use the 2.5mm drill bit to drill pilot holes prior to screwing (this will prevent the wood from splitting) and then use the square bit to drive the square-headed screws into the pilot hole. Countersink each screw head by driving it approximately 5mm below the surface of the timber, ensuring the hole can then be neatly filled.
How to build a garden chair:
Step one
Measure, mark and cut the 50mm x 50mm timber to the lengths listed and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step two
Use the two 420mm lengths and the two 1000mm lengths along with two of the 350mm lengths of 50mm x 50mm timber to create the front and back legs, as shown. The 350mm cross piece on the larger section should be positioned 420mm from the bottom of each leg. Fix all of these into position using PVA glue and 100mm square drive screws. Use a set square to ensure joints are at 90 degrees.
Step three
Attach four 350mm lengths of 50mm x 50mm timber into position, as shown, to form the back support of the chair, fixing with PVA glue and 100mm screws (drilling pilot holes first and countersinking the screw heads).
Step four
Fix the two previously constructed sections together with four 350mm lengths of 50mm x 50mm timber. The upper seat supports should all be flush and the lower side supports should be positioned 160mm up from the bottom of each leg. Again, use PVA glue and 100mm screws to secure (drilling pilot holes first and countersinking the screw heads), and a set square to ensure joints are at 90 degrees.
Step five
In the same way, fix the remaining 350mm length of 50mm x 50mm timber into position to form the lower central underside support strut, as shown.
Step six
Measure, mark and cut the 150mm x 40mm radiata decking into three 450mm lengths and then cut the remainder into a narrower piece measuring 350mm in length and 45mm in width. Smooth any rough cut edges with sandpaper.
Step seven
Attach these pieces of decking into position to form the seat, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and 45mm screws (drilling pilot holes first and countersinking the screw heads).
Step eight
Fill all the countersunk screw heads with exterior filler and allow to dry.
Step nine
Sand the entire chair, smoothing the filled areas and any hard edges and corners. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step ten
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the entire chair and allow to dry.
Step eleven
Apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Staycation, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Here's another idea
This old wooden kitchen chair has been repurposed into a garden patio chair using Resene Quick Dry and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Relax.
