Create a stylish house number plaque from a terracotta plant saucer and some Resene testpots – we show you how.
Materials:
Tools:
To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Oxygen.
Handy hint: The house number plaque should safely hang from an exterior nail or screw driven in at an upward 45-degree angle.
How to build arty house numbers:
Step one
Apply one coat of Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer to the terracotta plant saucer and allow to dry. Note: Some terracotta plant saucers may be pre-sealed. To check, apply a little water to the terracotta – if it immediately soaks in, you’ll definitely need to apply Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer.
Step two
Fix the screw eye to the centre of the piece of timber, as shown, pre-drilling a 3.5mm pilot hole first.
Step three
Fix the piece of timber to the back of the terracotta plant saucer using exterior construction glue and allow to dry.
Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Half Resolution Blue to the outer rim of the terracotta plant saucer, as shown, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Delta Blue to the inner section of the terracotta plant saucer, as shown, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step six
Using the craft knife, carefully cut out the house numbers to create a stencil. Trim away any excess paper so the stencil will fit in the centre of the terracotta plant saucer.
Step seven
Fix the stencil in place with masking tape and carefully stipple (dot your paint brush) approximately 10mm around the stencil edges using Resene Float – this will create the shadow under the numbers. Carefully remove the stencil and allow the paint to dry.
Step eight
Reposition the stencil approximately 5mm upward and across (diagonally left) from the previously painted area and fix with masking tape. Carefully stipple both numbers using Resene Half Resolution Blue, then remove the stencil and allow the paint to dry.
Step nine
Using an artists’ brush, apply a second coat of Resene Half Resolution Blue to the numbers and allow to dry.
Step ten
Using an artists’ brush, tidy up any areas where the paint may have bled under the stencil edge and allow the paint to dry.
Step eleven
Apply one coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS waterborne UV protective glaze to the house number plaque and allow to dry.
Here's another idea
If you’re feeling creative, add an illustration to decorate your plaque. This butterfly house number plaque was painted with Resene Adrenalin, Resene Alabaster, Resene Havoc, Resene Jordy Blue, Resene Nero and Resene Resolution Blue.
