How to paint your terracotta pot with a rust effect

Transform an old terracotta pot into a stylish rusty metallic feature using Resene FX Faux Rust Effect.

Paint a rust effect for your garden

You will need:

Bucket
Clean water and Detergent
Old terracotta pot
Paint stirrer
Resene Aquapel and Terracotta Sealer
Resene FX Faux Rust Effect
Resene FX Faux Rust Effect Activator

Resene Moss & Mould Killer
Resene plastic paint pot
Rubber gloves
Spray bottle with clean water
Stiff bristled brush
Wide paintbrush

Top tip: Leave the terracotta pot outside where the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect will continue to develop an attractive rusty patina as it weathers.

To get the look: Mark stained the background raised bed with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Grey Green.

Instructions

Step one
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer with five parts clean water.

Step two
Wearing rubber gloves, brush the solution onto the terracotta pot and leave for 24 hours.

Step three
Mix a little detergent with warm clean water and wash the pot. Rinse well with clean water and allow the pot to dry.

Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Aquapel and Resene Terracotta Sealer to the inside and outside of the pot and allow to dry.

Step five
Carefully stir the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect.

Step six
Apply one coat of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect to the outside, top and inner rim of the pot and allow four hours to dry.

Step seven
Apply a second coat of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect to the outside, top and inner rim of the pot.

Step eight
Once the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect is touch-dry pour some of the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect Activator into the plastic paint pot.

Step nine
Apply two coats of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect Activator to the outside, top and inner rim of the pot, allowing an hour for each coat to dry.

Step ten
After 12 hours, lightly spray the pot with water to intensify the rust effect.
