Garden hammock

Here’s a great addition to the backyard that will see you enjoying the lazy days of summer in style.

Make a wooden hammock for your back yard.

You will need: 50mm screw eyes (x42), 50mm x 50mm dressed timber – approx 20m, braided polypropylene rope (minimum 6mm) – approx 40m, drill with 12mm and 4mm drill bits, mineral turps for washing paintbrush, paint stirrer, paintbrush, pencil, Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain tinted to Resene Totem Pole, sandpaper, saw, scissors, tape measure.

Top tip: If you want to use thicker rope it may be necessary to use a larger drill bit for the holes.

Safety first: Ensure your hammock is securely tied at each end to a fence post or other stable object before using. The hammock can safely carry approx 85kg.

Handy hint: If the rope stretches over time simply untie the hammock at one end and adjust accordingly.

Here's another idea: In the same way, use pieces of driftwood or tree branches threaded onto rope.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Measure and mark twenty-one 800mm lengths of 50mm x 50mm timber.
Step 2 Step two
Use the back of the saw to rule cutting lines.
Step 3 Step three
Cut the pieces of timber to length and smooth rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 4 Step four
From the remaining 50mm x 50mm timber, measure and mark sixty 50mm lengths.
Step 5 Step five
Mark the centre of each of these sections, as shown.
Step 6 Step six
Using the central marks as a guide, drill sixty 12mm holes, as shown.
Step 7 Step seven
Cut these sixty pieces of timber to length and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 8 Step eight
Drill a central 12mm hole in each of the 800mm lengths of timber and a 12mm hole 150mm from each end, as shown.
Step 9 Step nine
Carefully stir the Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole.
Step 10 Step ten
Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole to the 800mm lengths of timber, allowing each coat to dry.
Step 11 Step eleven
Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole to the 50mm pieces of timber, allowing each coat to dry.
Step 12 Step twelve
Cut the rope into five 8m lengths. Double knot three of the pieces of rope approximately 3m from one end.
Step 13 Step thirteen
Thread the rope through the holes in a 800mm length of timber and then thread three of the 50mm pieces of timber, as shown.
Step 14 Step fourteen
Repeat step thirteen until all the pieces of timber are threaded onto the ropes. Again, double knot the ropes against the final 800mm length of timber.
Step 15 Step fifteen
Fix a 50mm screw eye into the end of each of the 800mm lengths of timber, drilling pilot holes first. Ensure each of the screw eyes is vertical. Thread the two remaining 8m lengths of rope through the screw eyes.
Step 16 Step sixteen
Knot together the fives strands of rope at each end approximately 600mm away from the end of the hammock.
