Build a bin

Make a compost container from fence palings without sawing any wood.

You will need: 18 x 1.2m fence palings, exterior PVA glue, 50mm and 60mm galvanised nails, galvanised staples, chicken wire, hammer, tinsnips, two medium-sized clamps and a paintbrush. Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Clover.

To get the look: The background shed wall has been painted with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Soft Apple.

Note: If putting the bin against a shed wall, leave at least a 20mm gap at the back for air circulation.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Prime the fence palings with one coat of Resene Quick Dry and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 2 Step two
Fix four of the fence palings together, as shown, using 60mm nails and PVA glue, to form the base of the compost bin.
Step 3 Step three
Attach three more palings to form the back, as shown, fixing them with 50mm nails and PVA glue. Move the frame into its final position.
Step 4 Step four
Attach a fourth paling along the back to form a central horizontal support. Hold in position with clamps at either end before fixing, using 50mm nails and PVA glue.
Step 5 Step five
Fix an upright paling at the front of the base frame and a horizontal paling along the top, as shown. Support at either end with damps before nailing and gluing. Attach a central horizontal support along the side.
Step 6 Step six
Repeat step five for the bin's other side. Fix two more palings across the top edge, one at the front and one at the back and two upright palings down each side of the front edge. Fix with 60mm nails and PVA glue.
Step 7Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Clover to the entire structure, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Attach chicken wire to the inside back and side walls, as shown, fixing it with galvanised staples.
