How to make a clay pot hanger

DIY project from NZ Gardener magazine

This is a great way to create an interesting display in a small space, and you can change the pots in and out, depending on what is in season.

How to make a clay pot hanger

You will need

Materials:

  • 100mm x 25mm timber such as cedar, macrocarpa, treated timber or reclaimed timber
  • 2m jute rope
  • 4 x small terracotta pots
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Template for the cutout (to get a copy of the template scan the QR code in the PDF or email mailbox@nzgardener.co.nz)

Tools:

  • Measure tape and pencil
  • Mitre saw or hand saw
  • Drill and 10mm wood drill bit
  • Jig saw and timber blade

Cost: $20 including pots. This excludes Resene products.

Instructions

Step 1 - measure and cut timber Step 1
Measure up and cut your timber to 600mm, using a mitre saw or handsaw.

Step 2 - mark out for the hanging hole Step 2
Mark out for the hanging hole 50mm from the top and centre. Measure 85mm from the top of the timber and mark out the top of the first hook using the template. The top of each hook on the same side should be 260mm apart. I also added a curve at the top and bottom. Remember to keep to even numbers on each side. I used two, as it is all about balance.

Step 3 - drill out the hanging hole Step 3
Using the 10mm drill bit, drill out the hanging hole, and the top and bottom of each hook, this makes it much easier to jig saw.

Step 4 - saw the marked out edge for the hooks Step 4
With the jig saw, carefully saw the marked out edge of the template for the hooks. Give the timber a good sand to remove any rough edges.

Step 5 - remove dust and stain timber Step 5
Remove all dust from the timber and apply the stain with the paintbrush as per manufacturer’s instructions. I used Resene Woodman Exterior Stain Pickled Bean.

Step 6 - thread the jute through the hanging hole Step 6
Thread the jute through the hanging hole. Your clay pot hanger is now ready to be hung and pots added.
