Plant display shelf

Create an eye-catching display case for your plant collection.

You will need: 4 x 1.5m rough sawn fence palings, horizontally slotted wooden panel, 50mm galvanised nails, hammer, saw, paintbrush, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Lickety Split.

Note: all materials for this project come from Mitre10 Mega.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Measure the exact width of the wooden panel (ours was actually 495mm) and mark the same measurement on one of the fence palings.
Step 2 Step two
Use the saw, as shown, to rule a ninety degree line across the fence paling and cut along this line with the saw.
Step 3 Step three
In the same way, measure, mark and cut another four pieces of fence paling.
Step 4 Step four
Saw across the slatted wooden panel approximately 1.4m from one end.
Step 5 Step five
Make a 'frame' around the cut wooden panel, as shown, using two full 1.5m fence palings and two of the smaller cut lengths. Attach at each corner with galvanised nails and fix the wooden panel into position, by nailing through from the sides.
Step 6 Step six
Fix the three shelves into position, as shown, nailing through from the sides.
Step 7 Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the shelf unit, allowing two hours to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Lickety Split of Resene Lumbersider to the shelf unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
