Rope trick

Mark Rayner pulls some strings and creates a crafty container.

You will need: Terracotta pot, bucket and cloth, exterior PVA glue, roll of thick garden string, pin, scissors, paintbrush, Resene Concrete Clear and Resene Terracotta Sealer.

To get the look: Mark planted the pot with a Burro's tail (Sedum morganianum) and painted the background wall in Resene Havoc.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Using a bucket of warm soapy water and a cloth, clean the terracotta pot thoroughly. Allow to dry.
Step 2 Step two
Following manufacturer's instructions, seal the inside and upper rim of the pot with terracotta sealer. Allow to dry.
Step 3 Step three
Apply a generous amount of PVA glue under the rim and wrap the string tightly around the pot, as shown.
Step 4 Step four
Turn the pot upside down and continue to wrap the string around the pot using plenty of PVA glue to keep it stuck down.
Step 5 Step five
Continue to wrap the string around the pot until you reach the base of the pot.
Step 6 Step six
Use the scissors to cut the string and hold in position with a pin, as shown. Leave to dry overnight.
Step 7 Step seven
Use the scissors to trim off any loose fibres.
Step 8 Step eight
Coat the outside, upper and inner rim of the pot with two coats of Resene Concrete Clear. Allow to dry thoroughly.
