Outdoor shelf

It’s easy to create this simple exterior shelf using treated timber battening and Resene Waterborne Woodsman timber stain.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 40mm galvanised nails, approx 5m of 25mm x 50mm treated timber battening, hammer, paintbrush, pencil, sandpaper, a saw and a tape measure. Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Nutmeg.

To get the look: Mark painted the plant pot with Resene Alabaster and Resene Wild Thing.

Other ideas: For a rich black effect stain the shelf with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Pitch Black.

Step one
Measure, mark and cut five 500mm lengths of timber, as shown.

Step two
Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step three
Measure, mark and cut two 250mm lengths of timber and smooth rough edges with sandpaper. Fix across the ends of the 500mm lengths of timber, as shown, to form the main body of the shelf.

Step four
Cut a second 500mm length of timber, smooth rough edges with sandpaper, and fix across the back edge of the shelf, as shown, leaving a 25mm gap along the back edge.

Step five
Cut two 200mm lengths of timber, smooth rough edges with sandpaper, and fix to the back of the shelf at right angles, as shown.

Step six
Measure, mark and cut two angled supports and smooth rough edges with sandpaper. Fix to the underside of the shelf, as shown.

Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman timber stain to the wooden shelf, brushing in the direction of the grain, and allow to dry for two hours.

Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman timber stain to the wooden shelf, brushing in the direction of the grain. Again, allow two hours to dry.
