Wooden picture frame

Give an old wooden picture frame a new lease of life with a little bit of help from Resene.

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: a damp sponge, fine and medium grade sandpaper, screwdriver, staple gun, paintbrush, picture tape, pliers and a wooden picture frame. Resene Aquaclear satin, Resene Colorwood testpot of Resene Mahogany.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Rice Cake.

Other ideas: For a paler effect coat the picture frame with Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

Step one
Unscrew the hanging device from the back of the picture frame.

Step two
Carefully remove the picture tape from around the edge of the backing board.

Step three
Use the pliers to carefully remove any picture staples or small pins. Remove the picture and backing board from the frame.

Step four
Sand the picture frame with a medium grade sandpaper to remove any old varnish. If the frame is painted, it may be necessary to use paint stripper. Finish off by sanding with a fine grade sandpaper.

Step five
Wipe off any sanding dust with a damp sponge.

Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Mahogany to the picture frame, brushing in the
direction of the grain. Depending on the depth of colour required, wipe off any excess with a clean cloth, or allow to dry and apply a second coat.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear,
allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Fix the picture back into the frame with staples and apply picture tape
around the join between the backing board and the frame. Reattach the
hanging device.
