Rustic planter

Create this fabulous rustic planter from reclaimed timber and finish it off with a warm brown wood stain from the Resene Woodsman range.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner – 50

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: a drill with 10mm drill bit, exterior pva glue, hammer, 100mm galvanised nails, 75mm galvanised nails, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, 200mm x 50mm reclaimed timber cut to the following lengths (approx): 220mm, 270mm, 280mm and 330mm, 50mm x 50mm treated timber cut into four 50mm lengths, an offcut of 19mm treated plywood, sandpaper and a saw. Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating wood stain tinted to Resene Warm Kwila.

To get the look: Mark painted the background stucco wall with Resene Sonyx 101 tinted to Resene Sorbus.

Other ideas: For a bright red finish use Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole.

Step 1 how to build a rustic planter
Step one
Measure and mark the wood to the lengths listed above. Use the back of the saw, as shown, to ensure cutting lines are at ninety degrees.

Step two
Cut the wood using the pencil lines as a guide. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 3 how to build a rustic planter
Step three
Assemble the sides of the planter, as shown, fixing at each corner with PVA glue and 100mm nails. Note how edges can overlap slightly.

Step four
Step four Measure, mark and cut a piece of plywood to fit in the base, as shown. Fix with PVA glue and 75mm nails.
Step 5 how to build a rustic planter
Step five
Attach the four pieces of 50mm x 50mm timber into position on the base to form four legs, fixing with PVA glue. Allow glue to dry.
Step 6 how to build a rustic planter
Step six
Drill six 10mm drainage holes in the base of the planter.
Step 7 how to build a rustic planter
Step seven
Stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman thoroughly with a paint stirrer.
Step 8 how to build a rustic planter
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Warm Kwila to the planter, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
