Garden edging

Quickly tidy up those garden edges with some landscaping timber and Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 31

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 150mm x 50mm H4 treated landscaping timber, 75mm galvanised jolt head nails, garden pegs, hammer, large mallet, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, coarse sandpaper, saw, set square, spade, spirit level and tape measure. Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Warm Kwila.

To get the look: Mark painted the background garden obelisk with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Colonial White.

Other ideas: For a subtle grey effect use Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Smokey Ash.

Step 1
Step one
Measure the garden edges and then measure and cut the landscaping timber to fit, as shown. Use a set square to ensure cuts are at right angles. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 2
Step two
Dig out turf in a straight line at a depth of between 50mm and 100mm to create a narrow trench. Use lengths of timber to ensure a straight edge, as shown.
Step 3
Step three
Use a large mallet to hammer in the pegs at 1.5m intervals along the narrow trench, as shown. Allow approximately 100mm of peg to protrude above the ground.
Step 4
Step four
Sit the landscaping timber into the narrow trench, as shown. Use a spirit level to make sure it’s level (Note: on uneven ground it may be necessary to follow the slope of the soil).
Step 5
Step five
Attach the landscaping timber to each peg with two nails, as shown.
Step 6
Step six
Use the set square to ensure any corners are fixed at right angles.
Step 7
Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain with a wide flat stirrer (also stir from time to time during application).
Step 8
Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman to the garden edging, brushing in the direction of the grain, as shown. Leave for 24 hours and apply a second coat.
