Wooden bowl

It’s easy to transform an old wooden bowl with Resene Enamacryl and Resene Waterborne Colorwood natural wood stain.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 17

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: an old wooden bowl, a cloth, damp sponge, flexible sanding block, old paintbrush, latex gloves, paintbrush, paint stripper, paint scraper and sandpaper. Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Waterborne Colorwood natural wood stain tinted to Resene Clairvoyant.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene Zylone Sheen tinted to Resene Dreamer and the display stand with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: For a rich dark look use Resene Waterborne Colorwood natural wood stain tinted to Resene Mahogany.

Step 1
Step one
Lightly sand the entire bowl – this will make it easier for the paint stripper to penetrate the old varnish.
Step 2
Step two
Wearing latex gloves, apply one coat of paint stripper to the bowl, following manufacturer’s recommendations. Leave for 15 minutes.
Step 3
Step three
Carefully scrape off the old varnish with a paint scraper, taking care not to damage or scratch the wood.
Step 4
Step four
Turn the bowl over and repeat steps two and three, removing the old varnish from the base of the bowl.
Step 5
Step five
Wipe off any excess paint stripper with a damp sponge. Allow to dry, and then carefully sand off any remaining varnish with a flexible sanding block.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Colorwood Clairvoyant to the bowl, applying in the direction of the grain, as shown. Leave for up to fifteen minutes (depending on the depth of colour required).
Step 7
Step seven
Carefully wipe off any excess Resene Waterborne Colorwood using a dry, lint free cloth. Again, wipe in the direction of the grain. Leave to dry for 48 hours.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the bowl, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
