Wooden house plaque

Transform a piece of driftwood into a quirky house plaque with a few shells and a testpot of Resene Woodsman.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: a small flat piece of driftwood, a selection of small seashells, damp cloth or sponge, dry lint-free cloth, exterior PVA glue, heavy garden twine, paintbrush and two brass cup hooks. A testpot of Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain in Resene Mosaic.

To get the look: Mark painted the fence the plaque hangs from with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Rob Roy.

Other ideas: Create a contrasting house plaque by staining the wood with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Pitch Black and use small white pebbles to form the letters.

Step one
Wash the driftwood, removing any sand and debris with a damp cloth or sponge. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Step two
Apply one generous coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman to all surfaces of the driftwood.

Step three
Before the Resene Waterborne Woodman has thoroughly dried, wipe off the excess with a dry, lint-free cloth. Leave for 24 hours to dry.

Step four
Carefully screw in two cup hooks along the upper edge of the piece of wood.

Step five
Write the first letter of the house name with PVA glue and attach small shells, as shown.

Step six
Continue forming the letters with PVA glue and shells, finishing each letter in turn.

Step seven
Continue until you have completed the house name.

Step eight
Add a few extra shells for decoration around the edges of the driftwood plaque. Leave to dry thoroughly before hanging from the cup hooks using strong garden twine.
