Oriental panel

Use two cool blue tones from the Resene Waterborne Woodsman range to create this stylish garden feature.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 12

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Oriental slatted panel measuring 900mm x 1800mm, 50mm galvanised flat head nails , 100mm galvanised flat head nails, approx 2.7m of 50mm x 75mm dressed treated timber, drill and drill bits, hammer, paintbrushes, pencil, sandpaper, saw and tape measure. Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Mosaic and Resene Pickled Bluewood.

To get the look: Mark planted a sculptural succulent in a large pot to complement the blue screen and fence.

Other ideas: Try two contrasting tones from the Resene Woodsman range such as Resene Pitch Black (fence) and Resene Bamboo (screen).

Step 1
Step one
Apply two coats of Resene Pickled Bluewood to the background fence, brushing in the direction of the grain. Leave each coat to dry for 24 hours.

Use the tape measure and pencil to divide the length of timber into three equal lengths of 900mm.

Use the back of the saw to mark off cutting lines at ninety degrees, as shown.
Step 4

Using the pencil lines as a guide, saw the length of timber into three equal parts to create support brackets for the panel.
Step 5

Apply two coats of Resene Pickled Bluewood to the support brackets. Leave each coat to dry for 24 hours.
Step 6

Attach the three support brackets to the fence using 100mm galvanised nails, spacing the brackets approx 800mm apart.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Mosaic to both sides of the oriental panel. Leave each coat to dry for 24 hours.
Step 8
Step eight
Drill pilot holes in the oriental panel to correspond with the position of the support brackets. Fix the panel to the support brackets with 50mm galvanised nails.
